About the Course
This course prepares students to successfully pass the reading comprehension portion of the skilled trades test (also known as the union apprenticeship test or aptitude test). Students will become critical readers who can identify main ideas versus details, make inferences and predictions, learn vocabulary through context, and understand the different questions being asked. Students will learn test-taking and time-management strategies that could be applied to other parts of the skilled trades tests. This interactive, seminar-style class will keep you motivated, build your confidence to pass the test, and allow you to move forward in your career.

Jessica Hahn
Jessica Hahn was raised in San Francisco and attended public schools there, though she was born on an oil
tanker off the coast of Florida. From a young age she learned self sufficiency and teamwork by watching her parents build homes from the foundation up. Now she lives in Berkeley with her three children, and has worked on designing the remodel of several homes she’s lived in.
Over the years, Jessica earned a Bachelor’s degree in English from UC Berkeley, a Master’s in Education from USF, and an MFA in Creative Writing from SFSU. She has over ten years of teaching experience, and has worked for the past several years at the Berkeley Adult School, helping adults earn their high school diplomas.
Jessica is excited to teach this new class, Reading Comprehension for the Trades, as an academic marriage of two of her favorite subjects: literacy and construction projects. She strongly believes that everyone who attends her class will have a successful experience, and enter their profession with more confidence and ability.
